Are there large trees here? It seems that the larger, more famous ones are more south, but our short trip wont allow us to go below the redwood national state park. Between that and Del Norte, are there areas comparable to avenue of the giants?

Yes. Take the Damnation Creek trail at milepost 16. The trail here is 2.5 miles one way. Just hike in the amount you want. Stunning!
