Rose died in September 2024 at the age of 83, and attorney Jeffrey Lenkov filed a petition to remove Rose's permanent ban. In a letter to Lenkov, Manfred said the permanently ineligible list no longer applies to deceased former players.

Pete Rose is finally out of MLB’s doghouse, and he has some company. Rose, placed on the league’s permanently ineligible list in August 1989 over gambling on baseball, was reinstated by commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday — and was joined by “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, according to ESPN.

With the lifting of these bans, all these players, including Rose, will now be permitted to be considered for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, with their earliest eligibility beginning in 2028.
