The Grand National has been slammed by animal charity Animal Aid after the fall of race horse Broadway Boy during the Grand National yesterday at Aintree. Broadway Boy was winning before the horror fall which happened three quarters of the way into the race.

The £800 horse who won the 2023 King George as well as a US Grand National (ironically, over hurdles), a Bet365 Gold Cup and Galway Plate. Snuck off to Thurles the day after Cheltenham to win a hurdle so in good form. Not the biggest, he likes decent ground. If it was a popularity contest he'd go very close.

ITV presenter Ed Chamberlin has credited Aintree staff with helping to save two horses who came into difficulty at the Grand National. Broadway Boy ran prominently for much of the contest but took a horrific fall at the 25th fence. He received immediate care on the track before walking into a horse ambulance for further treatment.

Modifications at Aintree continue to be made. Fences and hurdles are now painted white so they are more visible to horses, while the Grand National field is now capped at 34. John Pullin, Aintree Racecourse's clerk of the course, said: "People will notice that the padding and paint on fences and hurdles is now white, whereas it used to be orange.

One of the biggest events on Britain’s sporting calendar takes place Saturday when the Grand National horse race is run at Aintree in northwest England.
