October 21, 2025 - SACRAMENTO – On Monday, Sen. Catherine S. Blakespear, D-Encinitas, issued the following statement about Saturday’s live fire exercise at Camp Pendleton that result in shrapnel falling on the Interstate 5 freeway while it was closed as a precaution:
The event had prompted a tense back-and-forth between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and members of the Trump administration in the days leading up to the exercise.
Rounds were fired on Friday across Interstate 5 as part of a test run for Saturday’s event at Camp Pendleton in Southern California.
Newsom's office told the Los Angeles Times that it has received reports that the White House is directing a plan to use Navy ships off the California coast to fire missiles into Camp Pendleton.
