Caldor, the third-biggest fire of 2021, began on Aug. 14 of that year just east of Omo Ranch and burned 221,835 acres, forcing evacuations in South Lake Tahoe . A father and son were accused of sparking it by firing guns, but a judge ruled there was not sufficient evidence to try them on charges of reckless arson.

The wildfire started burning in a rural area several miles east of Highway 49 and southeast of Placerville. As of 4:30 p.m. the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit said the wildfire was burning at a moderate rate of spread.
