Wuhan: Iga Swiatek survives after erasing deficit in each set to beat Belinda Bencic
No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek overcame 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic in two sets 7-6 (2) 6-4 to reach the Wuhan quarterfinal, but it was all but an easy day at the office for the six-time Grand Slam champion.
Swiatek is now the first woman to win 60 or more matches in four consecutive seasons this century, having recorded 67 wins in 2022, 68 wins in 2023 and 64 wins in 2024.
Swiatek called the Asian Swing the hardest part of the WTA schedule and continued her campaign for fewer mandatory tournaments. Swiatek got a big boost when ATP World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz came to her defense, saying, "I agree with Iga" when it comes to a shorter schedule.
