Before FBI Director James Comey heads to trial in January over charges of lying to Congress, his team plans to put the prosecutors — and specifically President Donald Trump’s handpicked interim US Attorney Lindsey Halligan — on the defensive.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted on bank fraud charges after President Trump pressured the DOJ to investigate her. Lindsey Halligan, a former insurance lawyer, was recently assigned to the case.

Those in the dark included Attorney General Pam Bondi, people familiar with the matter said. The government shutdown, a rush to indict and internal divisions contributed to the lack of coordination.

O’Donnell tied Halligan’s struggles to a string of failed Trump-era appointments, including Alina Habba and Sigal Chattah, both ruled unlawfully serving as U.S. attorneys. “Trump,” he said, “is appointing loyalists, not lawyers.”

Halligan’s first prosecution faces pressure as filing errors fuel doubts about experience and the strength of the Comey case.

President Trump announced Saturday that he would be nominating Lindsey Halligan to serve as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The Attorney General was not informed ahead of Lindsey Halligan presenting to a grand jury in the Letitia James indictment.
