Marissa Bode, the first wheelchair user ever to play 'Wicked's' Nessarose, called jokes about her character's disability 'low-hanging fruit.'

In a video posted to TikTok on Friday, Bode shot down “gross” and “dangerous” jokes about her "Wicked" character.

Marissa then revealed that she is "deeply unserious" and enjoys "silly, goofy, harmless” jokes about Nessarose. However, she also explained: “Aggressive jokes and comments about Nessarose’s disability itself is deeply uncomfortable because disability is not fictional."

"It is simply a low-hanging fruit that too many of you are comfortable taking," the out actor said in a recent TikTok.

She plays Elphaba's favored sister Nessarose and recently, she took to TikTok to call out the "deeply uncomfortable" jokes people have been making about Nessa's disability. For context, Nessarose uses a wheelchair in Wicked. Marissa also uses a wheelchair in real life after a traffic accident at age 11 left her paralyzed from the waist down.

For those unfamiliar with the premise of the silver screen adaptation, Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as besties Elphaba and Glinda, who go on to become the 'Wicked Witch of the West' and the 'Good Witch' in The Wizard of Oz series.

The actress, who plays Elphaba’s younger sister, Nessarose in the live-action adaptation, takes to TikTok to slam the critics who have rude things to say about the character’s disability, as Marissa uses a wheelchair in real life.

Bode said she was not OK with “aggressive comments and jokes about Nessa’s disability,” calling the messages “deeply uncomfortable because disability is not fictional.”
