The CAF has published sanctions stemming from the AFCON final, with Achraf Hakimi, Sadio Mané’s coach Pape Thiaw, and several players suspended, prompting questions about their status ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final – a game to decide the best soccer team on the continent – ended in utter chaos on Sunday as fans caused a huge commotion and players walked off the pitch in protest on an evening which showed the best and very worst of the sport.
The infrastructure at Afcon showed Morocco’s readiness to host the World Cup later in the year. On six stadiums alone, the country spent US$1.4 billion. As much as US$10 billion was spent on allied public infrastructure for transport. The matches were of high quality on excellent surfaces.
Senegal’s victory marked a significant achievement in the country’s football history and lifted it in FIFA’s world rankings to 12th, while Morocco also reached its highest ranking despite narrowly missing the title. The highest ranking achieved by an African team was Nigeria's fifth in April 1994.
