Amazon Go shoppers use the Amazon Go app when they enter the store — scanning a QR code as they walk in. Everything a shopper picks up is automatically added to their virtual cart.

Amazon launched the Go concept, which offers shoppers a cashier-less experience, in 2018. At its peak in 2023, it had approximately 30 stores across the United States. Today, only 16 remain.

But with the Amazon Go store in Woodland Hills, Calif., closing this month, the retailer has shrunk its Go portfolio by about half since early 2023, to 16 stores in four states.

But, all that may change, thanks to technology used in the just-opened Amazon Go, Amazon’s first checkout-less grocery store (AKA, the meal-prep news of my kitchen’s dreams).

The “Amazon Go” store represents one of at least three different types of store formats the company is as a way to boost sales in the grocery business, reports WSJ.
