Heavy winds that swept through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Sunday night started “rapid fire spread” after a relatively slow day of growth, according to fire officials.

The fires varied in size but have already forced several evacuations and pre-evacuation notices, closed a national park, and the Deer Creek Fire near the Utah state line has already destroyed at least five buildings.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has verbally made a disaster declaration as several wildfires rip through more than 10,000 acres on the Western Slope and in Utah near the Colorado border.

Colorado’s poet laureate, Andrea Gibson of Boulder, died at their home early Monday, July 14, from ovarian cancer. They were 49 years old.

Andrea Gibson was a poet, author and ambassador of the arts. Gibson became the state's 10th Poet Laureate in 2023, with six full-length collections of poetry as well as two Independent Publishers Awards.
