The Dallas, Texas-based carrier transitioned from its longtime open seating system in keeping with competitors like American, Delta, and United Airlines to offer passengers more flexibility with a variety of seat preferences including extra legroom, preferred seats and standard seats.
Starting Tuesday, customers on Southwest flights will have assigned seats.
As of 10 a.m., there were 49 canceled flights and 19 delays in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, according to FlightAware.com. Nationwide, more than 3,800 flights were canceled and over 1,300 delayed on Jan. 26, after more than 15,700 U.S. flights were canceled over the weekend.
The changes Southwest Airlines has been planning for more than a year are now live — including assigned seats, ending the airline's half-century open-seating policy.
