As the Trump administration threatens to pull federal funds from universities, including for medical and scientific research, the University of California has announced a hiring freeze and additional cuts.

The University of California informed its system’s leaders in a letter that it will stop using diversity statements for hiring practices across all its schools.

The Department of Education issued guidance to all universities suggesting that their DEI programs — such as minority-focused scholarships — put them at risk of losing federal grants.
