A self-driving Waymo car turned into a deadly trap for its passenger as it began creeping along railroad tracks as a train barreled toward it, forcing the horrified rider to leap out of the moving vehicle and flee in terror.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Thursday it is investigating an incident in which a Waymo car struck a child near a Santa Monica elementary school. The child was struck by the self-driving car Friday during school drop-off hours while running across the street from behind a double-parked SUV,

In November, Waymo expanded its service area to stretch across more than 260 square miles of the San Francisco Bay Area, and added freeway access for passengers. Riders can now hail a driverless ride to San Jose Mineta International Airport as well as San Francisco International Airport.

But Waymo won’t have unfettered access to SFO’s terminals, at least not this year. Pickups and drop-offs will take place at SFO’s Rental Car Center, which is accessible to the terminals via the AirTrain. Additional locations, like the airport’s main terminals, will come later.
