The top 2-year-old of 2024 starts his Kentucky Derby prep campaign with a victory for Bob Baffert in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.

Trainer Bob Baffert reported all was well with Citizen Bull the morning after his 3¾-length win in Saturday’s Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita. Baffert added it remains to be determined if last year’s 2-year-old champion male makes one or two more starts before this year’s 151st Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Citizen Bull ran a mile in 1:36.71 under jockey Martin Garcia, earning 20 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby in May.

Tenma (who paid $2.40), whose four wins in five career starts include the Grade I Del Mar Debutante in September, won by 6 1/2 lengths in her first start of 2025 and Baffert-trained Cipriana finished second in a one-mile race whose already-small field was reduced to three by scratches.

There was a brief, anxious moment for champion juvenile colt Citizen Bull in his season debut Saturday in the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita. But after bobbling slightly at the start, the son of Into Mischief quickly seized control and never looked back.
