Prominent Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil will remain in an ICE detention facility in Louisiana for now following a procedural hearing in New York, days after he was arrested by federal officials at his Columbia University residence in an attempt by the Trump administration to deport him.

Khalil's arrest is the first known deportation effort under Trump’s promised crackdown on students who protested the war in Gaza.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Columbia University anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil “led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization."
