Smith made the Houston Astros’ Opening Day roster, three league sources told The Athletic on Tuesday, completing his six-week captivation of an entire coaching staff and clubhouse. The 22-year-old phenom is expected to start in right field on Thursday when Houston hosts the New York Mets at Daikin Park.

So the skipper pulled out his phone and asked if a certain someone was at Daikin Park, and that someone was Smith’s mom, Stephanie Hocza, who then gave her teary-eyed son a big hug in the clubhouse as he received the news he’d be with the big league club.

The Astros’ No. 1 prospect has been a constant focus by his coaches, former players and fans after being traded for in a deal that sent former All-Star Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. Smith has delivered, hitting .342 with four home runs, all while showing a versatility to play his natural position of third base and in the outfield.
