Elon Musk-owned artificial intelligence firm xAI has bought a 1-million-square-foot property in Southwest Memphis, Tennessee, the Greater Memphis Chamber said on Friday, as the startup looks to expand its AI infrastructure amid intensifying competition in the industry.

xAI has bought a one million sq ft (92,903 sqm) site for a new data center in Memphis, as Elon Musk’s startup looks to expand its Colossus supercomputer. Announced by the Memphis Chamber of Commerce on Friday, the land in the Whitehaven area of the city cost xAI $80 million, according to property records.

Memphian Hailey Thomas launched a petition on Change.org to "push" Elon Musk's xAI out of South Memphis and reduce pollution within the region.
