Brownlee made a heck of a touchdown catch, the highlight of the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Cardinals in the preseason opener here in Arizona — and, ahem, most certainly the highlight of the 48 seconds Patrick Mahomes spent on the field. But there’s something far more telling about that play. The throw. Or, rather, the decision to throw it at all.

Jack Cochrane's hit caused the opening kickoff fumble, and the Chiefs almost repeated the moment on the next kickoff. Punter Matt Araiza boomed a 67 yards punt. Kicker Harrison Butker was good from 58 yards. Nikko Remigio went 48 yards on a kick return. Rookie Nohl Williams turned in a stellar punt coverage tackle.

It was a short night for Patrick Mahomes, whose one pass went for a TD, and a bit of a long one for guard Kingsley Suamataia.
