Murals depicting baseball icons Jackie Robinson and Minnie Miñoso in Miami were defaced with racist graffiti. Mark Puleo of The Athletic reported Friday that Miami Police Department spokesperson Michael Vega said the department's special investigations unit is investigating the situation as a hate crime.

Robinson and Miñoso both occupy pioneering roles, not just in MLB history, but in the fight for civil rights. Robinson broke baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, while Miñoso was the first Afro-Latino player in MLB and the first Black player in the history of the Chicago White Sox.
