Awarded in response to historic flooding in 2023, funds will be used to repair or replace failing alley sewer lines, a major cause of basement backups.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Detroit and surrounding communities funding through its community block grant program for disaster recovery.

The federal government is sending $460.8 million in disaster recovery and prevention funds to Michigan, Wayne County and Detroit.

Some major assistance from the federal government will soon help the city of Detroit address some infrastructure problems and much needed repairs to its old sewer lines.

"We’ve got a sewer system built to handle 4 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, which was great for the 20th Century," said Mayor Mike Duggan.

The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and also includes $244 million for Cook County, $96 million for suburban Cicero and $89 million for downstate St. Clair County.

Funds for Michigan, Detroit and Wayne County are to help people recover from flooding, tornadoes and storms in late August 2023, officials said.
