The coastal storm is expected to bring days of rain, wind, rough surf and beach erosion along hundreds of miles from Florida to Long Island and southern New England.

According to the NHC’s latest Tropical Weather Outlook, issued at 2:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, the non-tropical low is already producing gale-force winds, though shower activity near its center remains limited. The system could briefly acquire subtropical or tropical characteristics before it moves into even less favorable conditions later this week.

Engineers say a sub-sea cable that brings internet services to Tiree in the Inner Hebrides was damaged by Storm Amy. The cable connects the island with Tobermory on Mull. Communications company OpenReach said the damage became apparent after power was restored to Tiree following last week's severe weather.

Right now, New England could see anywhere from a fall nor'easter to some regular showers or clouds during the latter part of the long weekend.

"Up to 2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in some areas near shorelines and tidal waterways resulting in an elevated threat of property damage around the times of high tide. Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront threatening some homes and businesses," a coastal flood watch issued by the office said.
