Michigan State's Board of Trustees on Friday approved plans to renovate Spartan Stadium, with some of the upgrades expected to be completed in time for the 2025 football season. The plan covers short- and long-term upgrades, and is expected cost more than $30 million.

Michigan State University's Board of Trustees on Friday approved $28 million in renovations and upgrades to Spartan Stadium.

The plan includes replacing videoboards, renovating the West Tower and authorizing the planning of future modernization throughout the stadium.

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees is holding its final board meeting of 2024, and are expected to address upgrades at Spartan Stadium.

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees voted ‘yes’ to update facilities throughout Spartan Stadium. Spartan Stadium has been the home of the MSU football team since 1923. MSU reports that in recent studies the university has found the stadium’s facilities to be deficient compared to peers in the Power 4 conferences.

MSU expects to begin the $28 million upgrades project in January and wrap up by August, in time for the start of the football season. Near-term improvements will include upgrades to the stadium’s videoboards and the first renovations of the fourth, seventh and eight floors of the West Tower since they were built in 2004.

The project would start with replacing the videoboards, two on the north and a primary one on the south. Construction would begin in January, and the videoboards would be ready to debut for the 2025 football season. The proposal said the current videoboards "are two years beyond their anticipated life cycle."

A year after celebrating its 100th anniversary, Spartan Stadium could be slated for renovations that would alter the home of Michigan State football before next season and plan for its long-term future.
