U.S. government agencies will hold a classified briefing for all senators on Wednesday on China's alleged efforts known as Salt Typhoon to burrow deep into American telecommunications companies and steal data about U.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency say that Americans should use encrypted apps such as iMessage and FaceTime to be safe from foreign hackers.

With the Salt Typhoon hack, FBI officials are encouraging people to use encrypted chat apps, despite desire to access those chats for itself.

The unnamed FBI agent on the call with reporters echoed the message, according to NBC News, urging Americans to use “responsibly managed encryption,” which is a rather big deal when you remember that agencies like the FBI have been most resistant to Silicon Valley’s encryption efforts.

U.S. government officials urged Americans to use encrypted messaging apps to avoid having their communications tapped by Chinese spies.

With Chinese hackers potentially lurking in US telecom networks, the FBI—a longtime critic of full end-to-end encryption—tells people to use it on their phones anyway.

Apple has been battling to maintain encryption for a decade. Two federal agencies now see it as a way to fend off foreign hackers.
