Derrick Hayes, the beloved father, brother, Street Spirit vendor, and friend to countless people in Oakland and beyond, died Monday, Dec. 9 due to complications of diabetes. He was 64.

Street Spirit is set to return to print in March after a 6-month absence, landing on the month of the newspaper’s 29th anniversary.

After 28 years in nearly continuous publication, the East Bay’s Street Spirit, a monthly newspaper written and sold by unhoused people, is scheduled to run its final print edition on June 1.
