A volcano erupted again to the south of Iceland's capital on Tuesday, spewing lava and smoke in a fiery display of orange and red that triggered some evacuations, although air traffic continued as normal.

A volcanic fissure has opened up near the town of Grindavík on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula following a significant uptick in earthquake activity. Images show lava breaching the town's defensive barrier, as Icelandic Met Office (IMO) representatives warn the fissure could continue to grow.

Iceland faces its 11th eruption and yet some people in Grindavík refuse to leave their homes, despite requests from authorities.
