On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first nuclear weapon used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people were killed instantly, with the death toll rising to around 140,000 by the end of the year. Three days later, the city of Nagasaki would also fall victim to an atomic bombing.
