A three-year study has shown that cockatoos have taught themselves how to open household rubbish bins. Five hundred birds and Sydney residents were tracked to reveal the new skill set. Cockatoos who couldn't master the lid stood by as another bird did the job for them. More local news: 7news.com.au/news/nsw 7NEWS at 6pm. #Sydney #7NEWS | 7NEWS Sydney

Clever cockatoos have learned how to open bin lids to forage for food! Not only that but they have learned how to do this from each other! How smart is that?! These findings are part of new research into cockatoo behaviour by the Dr John Martin here at Taronga, the Australian Museum and the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Well done, team! 🎥 Video courtesy of The Conversation. | Taronga Zoo Sydney

In several neighborhoods of Sydney, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos have learned ways to open trash bins and grab some leftover food. Researchers found that birds in a given suburb seem to learn their trash bin opening technique from nearby birds, leading to subtle differences in how cockatoos raid the garbage throughout the city. This has pitted two highly intelligent species against each other as people have tried to come up with deterrence methods to keep birds away from the trash. Photo © Darren P
