Love watching the canter (gallop) work😍! What a LOT of people don’t realise- is it is a VERY common procedure for ‘pacers’ to canter/ gallop work in their training! Pacers are often trained at a canter because as soon as trainers put their ‘hopples’ back on they are encouraged to pace and very rarely will try canter! Whereas trotters NEVER are taught to canter. If a trotter or pacer canters in a race (on race day) the driver has to pull the horse back to a trot/ pace by usually taking the horse

So a canter and a gallop are different variations on the same gait. The only difference is the canter is a three beat and the gallop is a four beat. Both the canter and the gallop can have a moment of suspension where all four feet are off the ground. #horsegirl | Amy Bowers
