The Glenfinnan Monument In the village of Glenfinnan, on the shores of Loch Shiel, sits the Glenfinnan Monument. It was built in 1815, by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale, as a tribute to “the generous zeal and undaunted bravery” of the Highlanders who fought in the 1745 Jacobite uprising, in the place where Charles Edward Stuart first raised has father’s standard, signalling the beginning of “that arduous and unfortunate enterprise.” Alexander MacDonald died in the year of its completion.
