This is Laurel Valley Plantation, a former sugar plantation in southern Louisiana. Before emancipation, this site relied primarily on enslaved Black labor. The cabins still standing today were built to house enslaved people and their families who worked the fields, mills, and surrounding land. After the Civil War, the plantation continued operating and later employed a mix of free laborers, including local Creole and Acadian workers and, in later years, immigrant laborers. But these structures w

At Laurel Valley Plantation in Thibodaux, Louisiana the historic cabins — the enslaved quarters — were built using local timber, especially cypress wood. Cypress was chosen because it’s naturally resistant to rot and insects, which helped these structures survive for over a century of Louisiana’s humid climate and many hurricanes. Historically, the cabins fall into a couple of different types: the older Creole-style cabins from the mid-1800s and the shotgun-style tenant houses from the late 18

At Laurel Valley Plantation, the slave homes were built in the mid-1800s from cypress cut straight from the surrounding swamps, raised slightly off the ground to survive flooding and rot. They were simple, cramped structures, often one or two rooms meant to hold entire families. After emancipation, these same houses did not disappear. They were reused by Black sharecroppers and later by immigrant laborers, including Irish, Italian, and Chinese workers brought in to sustain the sugar industry. So

Laurel Valley Plantation has had a long line of owners, but what makes it different from most Southern plantations is continuity. The land changed hands, but sugar production and labor control never truly stopped. The plantation began in the early 1800s under Étienne de Boré, a pivotal figure in Louisiana history. De Boré is often credited with proving granulated sugar could be produced commercially in Louisiana, helping turn sugar into one of the state’s most profitable and brutal industries. U

The Nottoway Plantation, the largest surviving antebellum plantation home in the U.S., has been lost to fire. Built in 1859 in Louisiana by enslaved Black individuals for sugar planter John Randolph, the estate later transitioned into a "resort" hosting weddings, events, and tours. | In Memory of Corey Donaldson

Laurel Valley Plantation is often included in local ghost folklore, with stories of a “Lady in White” seen walking near the main house at dusk, unexplained footsteps and cold spots reported around the historic slave cabins, and occasional claims of shadow figures appearing in photographs. Some legends also tie the activity to the Civil War era, when the original home was burned. While there is no documented proof of hauntings, the plantation’s age, preserved structures, and complex history have

Clay County Historical Society on Instagram: "In 1803, Zephaniah Kingsley took over the Laurel Grove Plantation, 2600 acres of land in modern-day Orange Park. A few years later, the 41-yr-old slave trader purchased 13-year-old Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye, a slave that had been kidnapped from her village in Senegal. Once Zephaniah paid for her, 'Anna,' as she came to be known, had little control over how her life would turn out--by the time they arrived back at Laurel Grove, he had made her his slave
