Check out the mouths on our paddlefish! 😱 Did you know paddlefish are filter feeders? Much like sharks, their skeletons are made of cartilage instead of bone. This lets them open their mouths wide and use their closely set gill rakers to capture microscopic food! Watch our paddlefish in action as they munch on krill! 🐟 | Audubon Aquarium

Technology on Instagram: "Paddlefish are ancient, filter-feeding fish known for their long, paddle-like snouts. They swim with their mouths open to filter plankton and small organisms from the water, using their gill rakers to capture food. This feeding method allows them to efficiently gather nutrients while swimming through rivers and lakes. Their distinctive snouts also help detect electric fields from potential food sources. Many have asked what the inside of the mouth of a paddlefish looks like. They are filter feeders for microscopic organisms. They have no teeth. They don't bite on bait therefor can only be caught by snagging. They are a very resilient fish. Not delicate by any means. There are no bones in it. Very good to eat but very selective on which ones to keep. Only keep a very small amount of them. Mostly short young ones and let the breeding population go back to be sure we have a great paddlefish popula

OdySea Aquarium on Instagram: "Paddlefish might look silly as they swim with their mouths wide open, but beyond their entertaining nature lies a crucial role. As filter feeders, they gracefully glide through the water, with their mouths agape, filtering out minuscule particles like plankton and microscopic algae. Just one of the many ways our ecosystems maintain their delicate balance! 🌊🐠"

Paddlefish are back on exhibit, and you can visit these fish in the newly renovated Charles and Marjorie Schrup Family Foundation Upper Mississippi River Pool aquarium. These ancient filter feeders have been swimming in our waters for over 200 million years. They’re largely unchanged since the days of the dinosaurs. These fascinating fish use their long nose, called a rostrum, to detect prey such as aquatic invertebrates, including zooplankton, mayflies, Daphnia (water fleas), and the larval for

Dating back to the time of dinosaurs, I think spoonbill paddlefish are absolutely fascinating creatures. Their huge rostrum is an elaborate sensor, used by the fish both for navigation and to detect the faint electrical signals of the plankton the fish loves to eat. Once zooplankton are found, the paddlefish uses that shark-like tail to swim forward, mouth open, and strain enough of the tiny creatures to make a meal. And it can do all this in muddy river water…at night. Amazing! Video taken at M

Meet the Spoonbill (a.k.a. Paddlefish) — one of North America’s most ancient and fascinating freshwater fish! 🐟 With its long, paddle-shaped snout, the Spoonbill uses electroreceptors to sense tiny plankton in the water — its favorite meal! This gentle giant gracefully filters the water as it swims, feeding with its mouth wide open like a living vacuum cleaner. .
