Any straight edge 1/4” thick ruler can be used to machine quilt and achieve stitch in the ditch. I have found, however, that this leads to more crooked seams. Our tendency is to gently move the ruler to make sure that our needles stays in the ditch. By having a ditch alignment, tab not only are we guaranteed that the needle will land exactly in the ditch, but we can see by comparing the offset edge of the ruler with the seam if there’s any bowing and adjust the seam accordingly. When I’m quilting in the ditch, I always check which was the seam was pressed and stitch on the low side of the seam. You can see I’m running my finger over the seams as I go. I am quilting my scrappy Liberty Stars quilt today and this is my first row of stitching. This is only 62” square so it’s only been spray basted. I’m using 40wt Aurifil 100% cotton thread and I have increased my stitch length on my Bernina to 2.8. I’m looking forward to seeing this one quilted! #emmajeanjansen #emmajeanjan
