Operation Crossroads Shot Baker was the second of two nuclear tests conducted in July 1946. It involved the detonation of a 23-kiloton atomic bomb, known as "Helen of Bikini," 90 feet below the surface of the Bikini Atoll lagoon. The test studied the effects of a nuclear blast on naval ships, sinking several and severely damaging others.
